American Citizen Services
  • The American Citizen Services Section is open to the public on weekdays from 8:30AM to 12PM.
    • No appointment is needed for American Citizen or Notarial Services.
  • Applications for Consular Reports of Birth Abroad require the parents', and in some circumstances the child's, personal appearance at a U.S. consulate or embassy. You may also apply for a U.S. passport for your child (in lieu of a consular report of birth abroad) at a passport acceptance agency in the U.S. if that is a more convenient alternative. Information on the locations of passport acceptance agencies in the U.S. can be obtained from www.iafdb.travel.state.gov. A list of appropriate documents that can be presented to prove the child's claim to U.S. citizenship is included in the instructions on the back of the DS-11 passport application.
Visa Services
  • Visa applications are accepted by appointment only.
  • Appointments can be made at the Visa Appointment Reservation System web site or by calling (900) 451-2778 (in Canada) or (900) 443-3131 (in the U.S.A.) or (888) 840-0032 (for calls by credit card).
  • In general, all applicants must appear in person for the visa interview at which time, in addition to an interview, the consular officer will digitally capture the fingerprints of applicants ages 14 - 79. Under very limited circumstances the personal appearance requirement may be waived (medical emergencies) but the applicant must still be physically present in the district where the application is submitted. In the case of applicants under 14 years, a parent or guardian must appear in person to accompany the child.
  • Issued visas are generally available at 3:00PM on the next working day following the interview. There can be additional processing delays. Those applicants that are approved, and have local (Canadian) addresses, should provide an XPRESSPOST "regional" envelope (from Canada Post or Canada Post outlet) to consular personnel at the time of the visa interview. Applicants that reside in the United States should expect to remain in Canada and return to the consular section on the appointed day to collect their new visas.
    • Some visa applications may need additional administrative processing. This can take several weeks, and in some cases, several months. Processing time vary. To avoid not getting a visa in time for your scheduled departure to the United States, you should try make your appointment well in advance of your planned departure.
